Purchasing SOC services – a timely solution

Vidmantas Piraitis, IT manager at Softera Baltic, states that cybersecurity is not a new topic for the organisation:

“We’ve been in the market for 18 years and work with Lithuanian and international clients who have high security requirements, so we’ve always paid close attention to cybersecurity. Following the update to Lithuania’s Cybersecurity Law in accordance with the NIS2 (TIS2) Directive, we are now subject to these requirements not only as a supplier but also as a key cybersecurity entity. Since we had already been consistently strengthening this area, the stricter regulations did not require us to fundamentally change our chosen course.”

The interviewee states that purchasing the Security Operations Center (SOC) services was also a timely decision:

“We had been considering a 24/7 SOC for some time, and there were several reasons for this. First, the geopolitical situation and the increasing frequency of cybersecurity incidents, especially supply chain attacks. Second, we’re growing rapidly, and the number of tools we use and licenses we hold is increasing. As the organisation grows, it was important for us to ensure that our security controls strengthen consistently alongside it. We have a lot of data, so it has become increasingly difficult to detect threats and distinguish between noise and real threats. We wanted a cybersecurity partner who would not only see what’s happening within our organization but also understand the broader threat landscape in Lithuania and around the world.”

Communication as one of the key factors

For Softerai, it is important that the chosen partner be able to work with third parties – other service providers and partners.

“Smooth communication when there are many stakeholders is one of the key elements ensuring a quick response. In such projects, it’s not just technology that matters, but also clearly defined responsibilities and actions. It was easy to communicate with the specialists at NRD Cyber Security and work together to find answers even to unusual questions as early as the vendor selection phase. During the implementation, we saw the same high quality of communication not only between us and NRD Cyber Security, but also between their team and our partners involved in the implementation project,” says Softera’s IT manager.

Augustinas Daukšas, a cybersecurity consultant at NRD Cyber Security, says that Softera Baltic wanted to view its SOC service provider not as a mere service provider but as a partner, and this had a significant impact on the smooth operation of the project:

“Every SOC service implementation is quite unique for us, because we tailor our services to the client’s needs and situation. We prepared the implementation plan for Softera based on the specifics of its operations, infrastructure components, and the security solutions it uses. A very important stage of the implementation project was taking inventory of the infrastructure components—that is, identifying the roles of these components and agreeing on their criticality. We also coordinated plans for communication as well as threat monitoring and response processes. However, even after completing the technical deployment of tools and detection mechanisms, the work on developing the monitoring systems did not end. They are constantly being updated, with new detection rules being developed and existing ones modified to align with the current threat landscape.”

When a SOC goes beyond simply responding to cyber incidents

At Softera, customer trust is of the utmost importance, so when selecting service providers, the company evaluated not only price, but also reliability, expertise and the partner’s ability to collaborate.

“To us, high-quality SOC services mean more than just monitoring security events and IT controls; they also provide us with a better understanding of our IT environment and the risks associated with it. We expect to receive incident notifications and to work with NRD Cyber Security’s specialists to strengthen our organisation’s cybersecurity maturity. The information and expert insights they provide help us to do this.” Threat hunting enables us to evaluate not only what the monitoring tools show, but also to search for and prepare for as-yet-undetected threats,” says V. Piraitis.

A. Daukšas states that effective SOC services should generate as much added value as possible for an organisation.

“We have numerous SOC clients in Lithuania, which gives us a broader view of real-world attacks and potential threats. One of our priority SOC activities, threat hunting, also contributes to this insight. As part of this process, when security threats are detected at one client’s site, we also investigate them at other clients’ sites. By formulating and testing hypotheses, and by relying on data from open-source monitoring and other sources, we search for hidden signs of an attack. This activity enables us to identify system vulnerabilities and attacks that are challenging to detect using standard intrusion detection rules. We use various commercial and open-source solutions for threat hunting, as well as our own Natrix solution, which we have been developing for many years.”

According to V. Piraitis, the partnership with NRD Cyber Security is based on trust and continuous monitoring of service quality.

“We recently conducted a test in the middle of the night to evaluate the effectiveness of the 24/7 service and the smoothness of communication with us and our other partners involved in the process. We were satisfied with the results, but we plan to continue verifying how the work is being performed because anyone can let their guard down. We do not view such tests as a sign of mistrust in our partner, but rather as a responsible way to monitor the services provided by the supplier and our own processes.”
