National CSIRT in a small country: JCSC case

This time we talk to Matt Palmer, Director of the Jersey Cyber Security Centre. Jersey is an island nation and self-governing British Crown dependency located off the coast of north-west France. Although small, with a population of just over 100,000, it has established itself as a well-known and respected financial services provider. With a heavy reliance on a financial industry that is highly targeted by cyber criminals, the country has made great efforts to increase its cyber resilience.

In the interview with Matt we discuss the following:

  1. How was the need for the national CSIRT recognised and what role does JCSC play in Jersey’s cybersecurity ecosystem?
  2. What steps were taken in order to identify the key responsibilities and services of the CSIRT?
  3. Key challenges when establishing the Centre and lessons learnt
  4. The benefits of being members of various international and regional cybersecurity organisations
  5. Process automation and inspiration for doing so
  6. Cybersecurity awareness raising campaigns, engagements with media, and other communication initiatives
